Թ University is proud to announce a transformative $1 million gift from Mildred H. Burkman ’82 and her husband Dr. Ronald T. Burkman, establishing the Mildred H. Burkman ’82 Endowed Professorship in Nursing—the first of its kind in the College of Health Professions.

Coupled with the recent opening of the state-of-the-art Health Professions Building, it seemed like a unique opportunity to make a difference.

Millie Burkman '82

This endowment honors Millie Burkman's nursing career in community health, school health and pediatrics. A non-traditional student, she returned to TU to advance her nursing education  through the RN to BS in nursing degree, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the profession and the patients she served.

"Improving the student experience and conducting needed research are the goals for our gift," says Millie Burkman. "Endowed faculty positions help attract high-quality teachers and researchers, which improves the academic environment and attracts well-qualified students. Coupled with the recent opening of the state-of-the-art Health Professions Building, it seemed like a unique opportunity to make a difference."

The Burkman Professorship will support a tenured, full-time nursing faculty member whose work exemplifies excellence in teaching, research and public service. Recipients will hold the title Mildred H. Burkman ’82 Endowed Professor in Nursing and will contribute to TU’s leadership in nursing education. The endowment will provide salary, benefits and non-salary support for the professor’s work, enabling innovative teaching, scholarship and outreach initiatives that align with TU’s mission and values.

“This extraordinary gift strengthens our ability to attract and retain top faculty who are shaping the future of health care,” says Lisa Plowfield, dean of the College of Health Professions. “We are honored by the Burkmans’ trust and investment in our college and university. Their gift will have a lasting impact by enabling faculty to expand their teaching and research in ways that directly benefit students, the nursing profession and the populations we serve.”
